Rural generalism is recognised as an important field of medicine to support the health of rural, remote and First Nations communities. There are incentives available to assist eligible doctors in their journey towards becoming a Rural Generalist.

The Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program is a Commonwealth funded training pathway for ACRRM registrars. 

AGPT provides:

  • fully funded* education, training, and support
  • standardised payments through the National Consistent Payment (NCP) Framework for GP training for supervisors, training posts, and registrars
  • access to apply for Flexible Funds which provides payments for additional costs of participating and delivering ACRRM training in a rural or remote community
  • salary support for registrars training in eligible Aboriginal Medical Services.

From semester one, 2026, GP and Rural Generalist (RG) registrars enrolled in a Commonwealth-funded GP or RG training pathway will have access to a salary incentive, study leave incentive and parental leave incentive. Eligible training programs include the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program and Remote Vocational Training Scheme (RVTS).  

The incentives aim to encourage doctors to specialise in general practice or rural generalism. For more information about the incentives, please refer to the GP Training Incentive Payments Policy.

Through an Australian Government initiative, eligible doctors get a reduction in their outstanding HELP debt for residing and providing services in a rural, remote or very remote location. 

ACRRM Fellowship is rural training from day one enabling you to eliminate 100% of your debt by the time you achieve Fellowship.
