The Department of Medical Oncology provides a tertiary level service encompassing the following areas:

  • Drug treatments and chemotherapy for patients with solid tumours.
  • Consultancy service to other departments of The Townsville Hospital and participation in multi-disciplinary cancer clinics at The Townsville Hospital.
  • The nursing staff provide dedicated care to cancer patients throughout their treatment, deliver chemotherapy and related supportive therapy, in a safe, and caring environment. Nurse Educators provide comprehensive education on treatment, and endeavour to include patients’ carers and relatives, in recognition of the importance of family support.
  • The Oncology Department in collaboration with the Mental Health Services of The Townsville hospital provides psychosocial services to cancer patients and their carers/relatives. These include assessment, education and psychological treatments via individual sessions or workshops, for patients at all stages of cancer, and women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer.

The Department of Medical Oncology provides the following facilities:

  • Outpatient Treatment Unit.
  • Inpatient Oncology Ward.
  • Public/Bulk Billing and Private Outpatient Consultation Suites.
  • Clinical Investigations

Dept of Medical Oncology is part of the Townsville Teleoncology Network which includes all the rural  towns in the Townsville and Mt Isa health service districts. Through telehealth, Consultations and oral chemotherapy are available to all towns and intravenous chemotherapy is provided in Mt Isa, Ingham, Proserpine and Bowen. In the future, most towns will be able to receive simple chemotherapy regimens.
